Capturing memories of our days at the Convent,
Saving our stories for posterity
Class of 1972, Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus, Main Convent, Ipoh
To capture memories from our days at the Convent school in Ipoh, we contacted many schoolmates, some of whom had migrated and are living in different parts of the world. A few teachers, now in their 80s and 90s, also shared their side of the story of teaching in a missionary school.
Most of us were born in 1955-56. We were the postwar and post-independence (1957) generation of Malaya.
The narratives, contributed by over 50 schoolmates and teachers, are a record for future generations as well as a tribute to ourselves. They portray a diverse mix, representing different backgrounds, races, and faiths.
The photos sprinkled within the document were collected from various classmates. They highlight the broad education and wide range of activities that we enjoyed, from sports, girl guides, talent and fashion shows to outings, food-fun fairs and performances like the Aladdin play.
The ‘end of year’ class photos in themselves tell a fascinating story of how we changed from being little, impish 12- and 13-year old girls in Form 1 to self-conscious (and, for some, assured) 16- and 17-year old young women in Form 5, our final year in secondary school.
We invite you to click/view or download the PDF document above to transport you back to those early days in our lives.
A big “Thank you!” to friends and teachers for your wholehearted support without which this project would not have been possible.
